Les premières mosquées et la transformation des sanctuaires wisigothiques (92H/711-170H/785)

The aim of this work is to analyse the different sources (textual and archaeological) relating to the mosques built by the Muslims during the first century of Al-Andalus, and to inquire into the fate of Christian sanctuaries. The starting-point of this study is a period of great complexity in which it is necessary to differentiate among several different models of Islamisation determined by the particular processes of territorial conquest and occupation. Despite the tropes and legends with which Arab writers laced their accounts of the conquest, these do contain valuable indirect information about the links between Al-Andalus and Eastern and North African Islam. The archaeological evidence suggests that the process of Islamisation was a progressive one, and as such archaeologists have great difficulty in identifying changes in lifestyles and in tracing the transition from a Christian to a Muslim society.
